India has a goal of achieving 50% clean electricity capacity, with 500 gigawatts from clean energy sources, by 2030. The Grid Controller of India Limited (Grid-India) is working with G-PST to make that goal a reality.

Activities and Impacts

Oscillation detection: Working with Grid-India, G-PST is engaged in enhancing India’s grid stability by implementing a control room tool that was developed by ISO New England in 2023 and aims to detect sources of network oscillations.

The control room tools that have been implemented help India to swiftly identify and mitigate sources of network oscillations, bolstering grid stability and reliability. This enhanced visibility into grid stability and associated risks both reduces renewable energy curtailment and enhances power quality, ensuring a more-efficient energy supply.

Resource adequacy: G-PST offered trainings on resource adequacy, providing insights into using an open tool, the Probabilistic Resource Adequacy Suite. Grid-India then continued working with G-PST to develop the model and conduct simulations to understand regional analyses which are essential for ensuring a reliable high-renewable-energy grid.

Grid-India’s capacity to conduct resource adequacy analysis meets government-mandated requirements and emphasizes its commitment to a reliable power system.

The adoption of the new standards for distributed energy resources by the Bureau of Indian Standards reflects the country’s readiness to embrace emerging technologies and integrate them into the grid.

Knowledge exchange: In October 2023, engineers and system operator staff from Grid-India participated in a study tour where they had the opportunity to work with experts at the National Renewable Energy Laboratory. These engineers also attended the Energy System Integration Group’s technical conference and engaged with system operators and other industry and research experts from around the world to exchange technical knowledge and best practices.

G-PST will continue to work closely with Grid-India, with plans that encompass a range of pivotal activities aiming to further strengthen the nation’s grid infrastructure, all while continuing to advance renewable energy integration. G-PST is already engaged in providing technical assistance and reviews of Grid-India’s market-clearing methodology, which is essential for optimizing energy resource allocation while enhancing market efficiency. Continued collaboration with the National Renewable Energy Laboratory focuses on integrating transmission constraints into grid operations, a critical step towards ensuring grid reliability and stability.
