Colombia is committed to achieving net–zero emissions by 2050. G-PST is engaging with XM, Colombia’s system operator, to connect its staff with the expertise and training needed to achieve its net–zero goal.

Activities and Impacts
Control room modernization: G-PST worked with XM to develop a roadmap for the control center of the future, tailored to the system needs and characteristics of the Colombian power system. A workshop was held with XM in January 2024 to gain clarity on the vision and needs for Colombia’s control center, offering strategic insights into how to best achieve the country’s targets.
Peer learning: G-PST has been executing a series of peer-learning sessions with XM and G-PST’s network of founding system operators and technical institutions that can inform Colombia’s key energy transition priorities.
In February 2024, G-PST hosted a workshop with regulators and stakeholders from across Colombia’s energy sector, including Comisión de Regulación de Energía y Gas, XM, Unidad de Planeación Minero Energética, and Ministerio de Minas y Energía, to provide clarity on the changes that are required for XM as the energy transition accelerates in Colombia. G-PST will also support XM with the formation of four multi-stakeholder working groups focused on grid codes, markets, modeling, and forecasting. These working groups will continue bringing the system operator, regulator, and other stakeholders together to advance best practices for Colombia on these technical topics.
In March 2023, engineers and system operator staff from XM participated in a study tour where they had the opportunity to work with experts at the National Renewable Energy Laboratory. These engineers also presented at the Energy System Integration Group’s technical conference and engaged with other system operators from around the world, as well as industry members and researchers, to exchange technical knowledge and best practices.
Additionally, the CEO of XM is on G-PST’s Steering Committee, which helps deepen collaboration. XM and National Grid Electricity System Operator are conducting a technical peer-to-peer exchange series on five high-priority topics for XM’s power system advancement, running through the first half of 2024. This includes an in-person exchange in which engineers from both companies will visit and learn from each other’s facilities.
XM is also actively participating in Women in Power System Transformation, demonstrating strong leadership in promoting gender equity and the inclusion and advancement of women in the field.
These activities have helped XM to advance the necessary steps to enable operation of a high-renewable-energy grid. Further, these solutions have made XM a leader in the G-PST network, and the system operator is now sharing its own experiences with control room visualization, in-house tools for system studies, and supporting fellow system operators.
