Peru anticipates that its power system’s share of wind and solar will more than double by 2026. To manage this growth, G-PST worked with Peru’s system operator, Comité de Operación Económica del Sistema Interconectado Nacional (COES), to prioritize updates to its control center to ready it for operation of a high renewable energy grid.

Activities and Impacts

Control center modernization: G-PST and COES collaborated to evaluate the COES control center using an assessment framework developed by the Electric Power Research Institute. The output of this process is a prioritization of updates COES can implement to ready its control center to operate a high renewable energy grid. By aligning closely with the needs and characteristics of the Peruvian power system, this strategic initiative supports optimized coordination and management of renewable energy assets, offering clear guidance to improve grid stability and reliability.

Following the insights from this roadmap, COES has established a new department dedicated to implementing the actions outlined in the Control Center of the Future roadmap. This department demonstrates Peru’s commitment to embracing technological advancements and driving innovation within the energy sector. Additionally, the collaboration between COES and G-PST resulted in amplification of the Control Center of the Future roadmap, allowing it to serve as a helpful resource for other system operators worldwide, fostering knowledge exchange and promoting best practices in grid management and renewable energy integration.
