Activities and Impacts

Inertia monitoring: G-PST and National Load Dispatch Centre (NLDC) are currently scoping activities surrounding the development of an open-source tool for advanced real-time inertia monitoring using phasor measurement unit data from NLDC’s system. This tool will be available to other system operators worldwide.

Peer learning: In March and October 2023, engineers and system operator staff from NLDC participated in study tours where they had the opportunity to work with experts at the National Renewable Energy Laboratory. These engineers also attended the Energy System Integration Group’s technical conferences and engaged with system operators and other industry and research experts from around the world to exchange knowledge and best practices.

NLDC has also participated in knowledge-sharing events through G-PST and the Association of Southeast Asian Nations Centre for Energy’s Asia Community of Practice, presenting on NLDC’s current inertia monitoring and calculation practices as well as renewable energy forecasting techniques.

Looking ahead, G-PST is planning to exchange knowledge with NLDC on topics such as:

  • Technical requirements for interconnection with other countries
  • Power system oscillation source analysis tools
  • Improved control room management and operator performance
  • Inertial estimation and forecasting monitoring tools
  •  Application of real time digital simulator in different scopes of power system operation
  • Operating power systems with high penetrations of renewable energy.
