Pillar 1 – System Operator Research & Peer Learning

Representatives from leading technical institutes and system operators worldwide have developed a research agenda focused on the near-term priorities of power system operators. This research aims to help operators reliably and cost-effectively integrate high levels of inverter-based resources (IBRs) over the next decade. Findings are shared globally to support system operators everywhere.

Pillar 1 research is guided by the Research Group, which brings together system operators and researchers to address key challenges. An Innovation Group, made up of Pillar leads and members from implementation councils and task forces, also contributes to research, development, and outreach efforts. These groups include system operators, energy companies, developers, manufacturers, universities, national labs, and consultants, ensuring a diverse and collaborative approach.

G-PST launched several task forces and implementation councils to address key research challenges, conduct field tests, and develop solutions for integrating high levels of IBRs. G-PST also collaborates with the Electric Power Innovation for a Carbon-free Society Center to advance global research efforts.

  • Control Room of the Future Implementation Council: Focuses on advancing control room operations through research-industry collaboration, improving real-time data processing, grid stability, and operational flexibility for low-emission, reliable power systems.
  • Grid-Forming Technologies Council: Works to overcome barriers to commercial adoption of grid-forming inverter-based technologies and accelerate their deployment.
  • Stability Implementation Council: Develops advanced tools and methods to assess and manage system risks associated with high levels of inverter-based resources.
  • Integrated Planning and Resource Adequacy Research Team: Examines how increasing variable, energy-limited resources and extreme weather events impact planning practices needed to ensure secure, cost-effective power systems.
  • System Needs and Services Task Force: Explores the transition from synchronous machines to inverter-based resources, defining essential system services for maintaining reliability and stability.
    • The task force produced a foundational document describing the evolving needs and services to maintain a reliable and stable power system irrespective of whether it is dominated by synchronous machines or inverter-based resources.
  • The Distributed Energy Resource (DER) Task Force: Develops system architecture and tools to enhance observability, control, and grid services from DERs while ensuring reliable system operations.

The Pillar 1 Research Repository tracks current and recent research projects worldwide that align with the G-PST Research Agenda. This resource helps funding organizations and research institutions stay informed, avoid duplication, and connect with system operators for input and demonstration opportunities. The repository is continually updated, and new contributions are welcome.
