This workshop is the first in a series of events dedicated to exploring the topic of establishing an independent system operator (ISO). It is organized in collaboration with ZESCO, the Southern African Power Pool (SAPP), and the Regional Energy Regulators Association of Southern Africa (RERA). This installment sheds light on the evolution of ISOs in the United States, discussing the rationale behind their establishment, the regulatory framework, and the key principles that guide their governance. Topics include the U.S. Federal Energy Regulatory Commission (FERC) Order 888, the role of RTOs, funding mechanisms, leadership structures, oversight, and more.
